Venture Capital, Conferences and the DC Tech Entrepreneur

In Business, Examiner.com, Tech and Social Media on 18/05/2012 at 21:14

Investment capital and the potential for a sound financial foundation is one of the most important considerations for any startup tech company.  DC-based Tech companies are no different than companies in Silicon Valley or New York City when it comes to seeking out and finding investment capital.

They often have challenges when it comes to gaining access to investment capital.  When it comes to the tech industry everything is about who you know and the extent of your network.  As with most companies entrepreneurs start with an idea.

Once that idea is formed, depending on the entrepreneurial philosophy, the entrepreneur will either jot it down on paper or start building out a prototype of the idea.  However it goes, an entrepreneur will eventually need to seek investment capital to see their idea and potential dream to fruition.

The best way to go about this is to seek out events and conferences specially geared towards pairing entrepreneurs with investors and venture capitalists.  One such conference is right around the corner and if your company is in DC, the DMV or anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic and you’re looking for money, you need to be there.

The Mid-Atlantic Venture Association (MAVA) is sponsoring Capital Connection ’12.  This conference “will bring together the complete community of high-performing, innovation-based companies at every stage and across diversified sectors, with the investors and advisors that support their growth. When one who is not from the tech industry hears or reads the word hack it probably brings a number of images to mind.  The more popular Images which come to mind are of caffeine guzzling nerds sitting in a darkly lit room with three or four computer screens surrounding them and attempting to break into some top-secret network and wreak havoc or steal millions from some large financial institution.

Of course these stereotype have an amount of truth associated with them.  But in the real world of hacking there are different types of hackers.  You have White Hat, Black Hat and the newer designation of Grey Hat.

Each have their place in the mythos of hacking.  But for the sake of this article let’s focus on how startups as well as established tech companies are utilising “hackathons” to offer both monetary prizes and recruit new talent.  As these hackathons find their way to the District I will be sure to mention them and provide the details on how to participate.

On Saturday, 2 June and Sunday, 3 June 2012, local DC-based entrepreneurial tech company Study Hall will be hosting a hackathon at their headquarters located at 2428 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20007. (cont … Examiner.com)
